Southampton has had a centuries-long association with the sea and ships, from the Mayflower via RMS Titanic to the Tall Ships Youth Trust and modern cruise ships, and much more besides. So, when the Lord Mayor’s office approached Maskers Theatre Company to put on a show highlighting Southampton’s maritime history, they dove right in and produced a show to create quite the splash!

Masker’s Time And Tide is a collection of sketches, monologues, poems and a cappella sea shanties, reflecting the history of Southampton and its links with the sea – and is an evening that’s a lot of fun!

It’s not easy to pull together a cohesive show like this, but Director Sheana Carrington has overseen a production which flows like gentle running water over the sands of time. Reading from scripts in a dynamic and interesting way is also an underrated skill, but each of the six performers achieved this with aplomb as they shared Southampton’s nautical past and present, ensuring genuine fascination with their seafaring facts and chronicles, in a manner somewhere between Horrible Histories and audio dramas; but their acting skills really come to the fore when they immerse themselves in their characters during the memorised seections and monologues.

However, amongst the historical sketches, there are sombre events as well as humorous tales, none more so than the well-known tragic accounts of the sinking of the Titanic, and the much less-known horrors surrounding the death of poor young Richard Parker, a cabin boy who was eaten by his ship mates during tragic circumstances. In stark contrast to the more comical excerpts, these were treated with the utmost respect by the actors, bringing poignancy, empathy and authenticity to their performances.

In such a collaborative group production as Time And Tide, it seems churlish to pick out individuals for particular praise, especially when each member of the cast had their moments where they absolutely shone amongst many entertaining moments, including Duncan Randall’s King Canute, Marie McDade and Dawn Gatrell’s multifaceted characters, and Brian Stansbridge and Maria Head plaintively searching for their ship!

However, special mention must be made for Neil Maddock, who effortlessly switched between his inspirational speech from Shakespeare’s Henry V, to ‘typically British’ middle/upper-class RP speech from early-mid 20th century, and from murderous intent as Parker’s captain Tom Dudley to his natural flair and aptitude for comedy as he urged the audience to sing ‘Good-Bye-ee’ – which they all did with gusto! This seems the perfect production to showcase Maddock’s versatility and performance skills.

Musical interludes were provided by guests Southampton Salty Sea Dogs – “Southampton’s finest shanty crew!” – who grew in confidence and repartee, with their unaccompanied sea shanties evocative of pirates singing together with their own harmonies over a bottle or two of rum at the end of a long day of piracy, endearing them to the audience and generating more community singing!

Production elements were deceptively simple, but the shades of blue, green and aqua through outfits, lighting and props, alongside appropriately chosen projected images, well designed sound effects and Rosa Longman’s scene-setting pre-show piano playing, all combined to create a very aesthetically pleasing production reinforced by vibrant and excellent performances.

Some may think that the history of Southampton is boring but not when presented like this!

Time and Tide is an excellent evening of stories, songs and sea shanties presented by the Maskers Theatre Company with the help of the Southampton Salty Sea Dogs.

The show was inspired by the current Lord Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Valerie Laurent. She wondered if the Maskers could put on a show linking Southampton with the sea in support of the Lord Mayor’s charities. The show was recently performed in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Directed by Sheana Carrington who is a founder member of the Maskers, Time and Tide presents a chronological run through of some of the key moments in the history of our city by the sea. Narrative, poems, short scenes, humour and song are all used to tell the maritime story of Southampton, often known as “The Gateway to the World”.

Particular highlights were the stories of King Canute played by Duncan Randall, the departure of Henry V’s troops in 1415, Jane Austen’s time in Southampton, the tragic tale of Richard Parker from Itchen Ferry village, the development of the Spitfire and the story of the Queen Mary, which took its maiden voyage from here in May 1936. When the production of Spitfires at Woolston was halted by bombing raids in 1940, production was dispersed to many local sites including the very building now occupied by the Maskers Theatre company. A Commemorative Plaque outside tells the story, put there by the Spitfire Makers Charitable Trust.

Neil Maddock gave a rousing performance of the First World War tune about a departing soldier, Good Bye-Ee. The Noel Coward classic ‘Has Anybody Seen our Ship’ was superbly performed by Maria Head and Brian Stansbridge.

Special mention must go to the Salty Sea Dogs. They sing shanties acapella and obviously really enjoy what they do. Credit for this to Pauline McWilliams who started the Salty Sea Dogs in 2015 and was present to proudly watch ten of this glorious choir perform. They finished the evening by teaching the audience the hand actions to a shanty and it was great fun as everyone joined in. Another triumphant evening for the Maskers.

Director & Cast

Compiled and directed by

Sheana Carrington
Sheana is a founder member of Maskers and appeared in their first production, as Hero in Much Ado About Nothing. She directed Little Women at the Nuffield and Wind in the Willows in the grounds of Mottisfont Abbey. She says that it was her favourite show to direct. Sheana is also involved in costuming shows; her last production was The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Maskers’ Studio. It was set in the thirties, so was a lovely concept to design.
She has been involved with many anthologies at Christmas and a Rose one, which was performed in Mottisfont Rose Garden, but that was several years ago!

Guest Performers

SouthamptoncSalty Sea Dogs
Southampton's finest shanty crew!
Southampton Salty Sea Dogs are a group of men who sing shanties together unaccompanied (no piano or backing track). They learn by ear in the traditional way and love to create their own harmonies. They perform frequently around the Southampton area. SSSD are led for this show by John Bailes.

Siobhan Spingys
Siobhan is a primary school teacher who has always loved singing! She has sung in several choirs over the years, from classical to sea shanties, taking part in the Youth Proms along the way. You can sometimes find her singing at local events, guitar in hand!

Denise Fenwick
Denise started singing in 2002 when visiting a friend in Sheffield, who took her along to a workshop presented by the late Nick Prater, renowned pioneer of the community choir movement. To say that she was “blown away” by the experience would be a huge understatement! Back in Southampton, Denise found “Women Singing for Fun”, led by Maggie O’Connor who is another proponent of the Natural Voice Network, holding the belief that singing is everyone’s birthright, regardless of musical experience or ability. That led on to eight wonderful, inspiring and completely luscious years of singing with Pauline McWilliams’ “Glorious Harmony” choir, with a good helping of “Southampton Shantywomen” on the side. When not singing, Denise can be found in the greenhouse, walking or messing about with boats.
