Just 140 words a day. How would you use them?

Say what you think.

The average person will speak 123,205,750 words in a lifetime. But what if there were a limit? Oli and Bernadette are about to find out. Set in a world where a new hush law has limited each person’s speech to 140 words per day, it explores a young couple's struggles to communicate – both before and after the law comes into effect. This clever play is about what we say and how we say it; about the things we can only hear in the silence; and how inequalities are intensified by austerity in any form, even linguistics. Sam Steiner’s debut play premiered at Warwick Arts Centre in 2015, before appearing at Latitude Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Camden People’s Theatre, London.

'A masterpiece of beautiful simplicity' - Broadway Baby
'A beautiful play about the beauty and preciousness of language… about as promising as debuts get' - Time Out
‘Takes the can opener to a typical opposites-attract romcom in order to explore wider issues of democracy and free speech' - Guardian
'[An] accomplished debut… bright, light and sharp - a rom-com with smarts' - WhatsOnStage

Director & Cast

The Director of this production is Mary Stone
Mary is delighted to be directing at Maskers for the first time! It will be the fourth show she has directed; the other three were all with The Chesil Theatre in Winchester: God of Carnage (2016), Colder Than Here (2013) and the NODA award winning Last Train to Nibroc (2011). Mary has also directed for the Chesil’s 10x10 festival, produced several shows and worked backstage in a number of roles from Stage Manager to Lighting Operator. Mary has appeared on stage at the Chesil, with roles in Entertaining Angels, Kindertransport, Blood Wedding, An Inspector Calls and Habeas Corpus. She is also a writer. She has written comedy sketches, a short film and has had a short story published in an online anthology of horror stories!

Bernadette is played by Marilyn White
After playing the somewhat evil Eva in Happy, Marilyn's debut performance with Maskers, Marilyn is extremely excited to be cast in Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons as the down to earth, demure Bernadette, who is in complete contrast to the previous character. Acting in the round will be a first for Marilyn, and she looks forward to working together with Mary Stone and Holly in what she thinks will be a boundary breaking show.

Oli is played by Holly McLachlan
Holly is a Hampshire-based actor, who was raised around the Southampton and Portsmouth area. She has just graduated from the BA (Hons) Acting course at Arts University, Bournemouth, with First Class Honours, where she unearthed her adoration for Shakespeare and creating daring contemporary theatre. She has been trained in movement, singing and voice acting and has developed skills in directing and writing for stage. Holly has been in productions such as a gender-bent performance of As You Like It, As If, (Orlando), The Children's Hour (Martha Dobie), Wallflower, an historical storytelling piece staged in the ruins of Berry Pomeroy (The Devil), as well as numerous short films for the Bournemouth Film School.
