Bah Humbug?

A Christmas anthology

compiled and directed by Avril Woodward

The Maskers presented Bah Humbug? in the Tudor Merchant's Hall, Southampton from Monday 8th December to Saturday 13th December 2008. The show was well received by our audiences and we played to almost full houses every evening

Director's Notes

Bah Humbug? is an anthology, a collection of selected pieces of prose, poetry or music with the common theme of Christmas. What a rich seam to mine for an anthology!

Artists, writers and musicians have for two thousand years tried to encapsulate the mystery, the awe and the wonder of the birth of a baby boy. A boy born to homeless parents who had travelled to Bethlehem from their own home town of Nazareth, directed there by the Romans for a census to be taken, born in a stable because "there was no room for them in the inn". A boy whose birth was celebrated not only by his parents but by the shepherds, kings and angels. A boy who while still a baby had to be spirited away from the country of his birth because King Herod wanted him dead.

Today the Christian World still celebrates what is seen by many as the greatest Festival of the year with Nativity Plays, Carol Services, family get-togethers, presents, parties, special food and drink, trees and decorations, and not to mention pantomimes.

We hope that part of your celebrations will be your enjoyment of this Maskers Christmas Collection.
